For most patients, the process involves two standard procedures about six months apart.
During your first treatment, the implants themselves are securely placed in your jawbone. After placing the implants, your oral surgeon will allow between three and six months for your jaw to heal and form strong bonds with the new “roots.” You’ll be able to wear a temporary denture and eat a soft diet while you heal.
The second phase of your treatment will begin when your jaw has thoroughly bonded to the implants. During the second phase, your oral surgeon will attach small posts (also called abutments) to the implants in your jaw. Together, these pieces serve as anchors for the artificial teeth. For most patients, there’s little or no disruption to their everyday lives during the dental implant process.
